Here is the intent-based prefetch hook Tomas mentioned. It is small enough to paste.

The idea: a row is a plain link until the pointer, keyboard focus or a touch reaches it, and only then do we start loading that conversation. The list never loads more than a handful of them, and only the ones someone is actually looking at.

It is behind a setting for now so we can compare both behaviours on the test devices before we commit.

One open question: should the first row prefetch eagerly? It is the one people open most. I left it off for now.
